This week’s small space is from Freshome and is a tiny apartment in Stockholm. I’m not sure exactly what the square footage is but I’d guess around 400-500. It features a single room with an alcove. An important aspect of design in small spaces is to be creative and use the space to its full potential. This apartment does a perfect job of this by maximizing the alcove area as a bed nook. This nook could have been used as a small dining area instead, but by placing the bed here it stows away an item with a large footprint and also gives it more of a sense of privacy and intimacy by being tucked away in the walls and away from the main living area. They also used another nook at the entry of the home as a makeshift walk-in closet by simply installing a curtain rod and curtain. This apartment reflects an affordable, simple minimalist design style that would be perfect for the average person looking to downsize to a small apartment.

Jessica, another small space design idea that would work great in an apartment like this one is Zoom-Room, the electronic, remote controlled, retractable bed. Unlike traditional Murphy Beds, it rolls up behind an elegant cabinet (or, if you want to be truly minimalist, a built-in paneled wall). It is especially attractive because you can put a flat screen TV in front of the unit. An added bonus is that it’s as comfortable as any bed on the market, thanks to the special foam mattress and adjustable Beech Wood slat frame (the “box springs” of Europe). Check it out at www. I have come across the zoom room wall bad before and think it is a very innovative design! Would love to look into one for my new apartment. Thanks for posting your link!
